Communities for the Young Child
Our communities for the young child are in session Monday through Friday starting at 8:30am. A half-day pick-up time of 1pm is available, our regular pick-up window is 3:15pm-3:30pm, and an optional extended day runs until 6pm.
Families can choose for their child to attend 2 days (Tuesday & Thursday; 1pm pick-up time only), 3 days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; 1pm pick-up time only), or 5 days a week (all pick-up times available).
Young child communities have 12 children, one Lead Teacher (Guide) and two Assistant Teachers (Guides), with an adult to child ratio of 1:4. We welcome children to attend who are between 16 months and 3 years old at program start. Children do not need to have completed toilet learning to attend.
Each day in a Montessori classroom is a little different, as the day is shaped by each child’s interests and independence. The children enjoy a two-hour work period in the classroom, choosing independent work and receiving lessons; they also enjoy a daily walk and outdoor play period. Children return to the classroom to eat lunch together, practicing our table manners, etiquette, and the art of conversation. If children are staying until 3:30pm, there is a rest period in the afternoon after lunch.
The Lead and Assistant Guides work to provide a joyful and supportive environment, give children individual and group lessons, allow the children freedom to explore, and build a peaceful community.
We are pleased to offer a no-commitment program for parents in terms of volunteering. Our Lead and Assistant Guides are happy to assist and support the children in the classroom. We also offer conversation evenings for families to further support all caregivers of young children.
